AMG Speedshift™ AMG SpeedShift™ programming provides up to 35% faster gear changes, automatically downshifts during braking, prevents unwanted upshifting while cornering, offers one-touch selection of the best gear for maximum acceleration (Shift into Optimum Gear), and features torque converter lockup in all forward gears. Fingertip manual mode allows direct-access shifting through forward gears via buttons on back of upper steering-wheel spokes (left button downshifts, right button upshifts) or via Touch Shift feature of shift lever, and will automatically intervene only to induce an upshift at redline, to downshift as needed upon full throttle, and to select 1st gear when the vehicle stops. Three stages of sportier driving are available in the manual mode: Sport, SuperSport and Race. Each stage increases the response, reaction and closing times of the automatic collision shortening the shift processes. In Standard and Comfort modes, the steering-wheel buttons operate the Touch Shift feature.

Traction Control & Stability Systems

Electronic Stability Program (ESP) Standard ESP compares the driver's intended course, via steering and braking inputs, to the vehicle's response, via lateral acceleration, rotation (yaw) and individual wheel speeds. ESP then brakes individual front or rear wheels and/or reduces excess engine power as needed to help correct understeer (plowing) or oversteer (fishtailing). ESP also integrates all-speed traction control, which senses drive-wheel slip under acceleration and individually brakes the slipping wheel or wheels, and/or reduces excess engine power, until control is regained¹. Chassis

Body construction Body shell and chassis are made entirely from high-strength carbon fiber. Used in race cars and airplanes, carbon fiber is extremely strong and light weight compared to conventional materials. This material ensures outstanding strength, rigidity and energy absorption.

Brakes Carbon fiber reinforced lightweight ceramic brakes. 14.6" front discs with 8-piston calipers. 14.2" rear discs with 4-piston calipers. Carbon fiber construction provides an extremely sensitive response coupled with a high temperature resistance of up to 1000 degrees Celsius.

Airbrake The airbrake on the SLR provides increased braking power and stability when braking from high speeds. The airbrake has 4 positions. At speeds under 59 mph it lays totally flat providing no air resistance. When the vehicle reaches 60 mph it automatically deploys to 10 degrees. A 30 degree position is driver selectable at any speed. Finally, when the driver steps heavily on the brake pedal, the rear spoiler rises to an angle of 65 degrees, boosting braking power by producing aerodynamic drag.

Sensotronic Brake Control Sensotronic is an electrohydraulic braking system which transmits brake pressure individually to each wheel based on driver input and various vehicle parameters. Sensotronic more precisely controls brake pressure at each wheel during normal braking, emergency stopping and ESP operation². Soft Stop precisely modulates brake pressure as the car approaches a stop during normal braking. Automatic brake drying applies the brakes lightly and briefly based on windshield wiper use and driver braking intervals, to reduce moisture on the brake surfaces in wet weather. Predictive brake priming sets the brake pads nearer the discs when the driver quickly releases the accelerator, for faster brake response.

Brake Assist Brake Assist senses emergency braking via the speed at which the driver presses the brake pedal and immediately applies maximum available power boost, potentially reducing the overall stopping distance by helping to eliminate the delay caused by a common human tendency not to brake hard enough, soon enough. Letting up on the brake pedal releases Brake Assist³.

Antilock Braking System senses impending wheel lockup under heavy braking and pumps the front brakes individually or the rear brakes together (to help maintain stability) as needed up to 30 times per second, to prevent lockup and maintain steering ability. Restraint Systems

Integrated Restraint System Driver and passenger are each provided with a front air bag, a door-mounted side-impact head/thorax air bag, a kneebag, and 3-point seat belt with Emergency Tensioning Device (ETD) and belt force limiter¹.

Adaptive dual-stage front air bags are deployed in response to frontal impact severity¹.

ETDs are deployed in a front or rear impact exceeding a preset threshold of severity, or certain rollovers. An ETD will not deploy if seat belt is unfastened.

Occupancy sensor prevents the passenger's front and side-impact head/thorax air bags from deploying if the seat is unoccupied. An ETD will not deploy if seat belt is unfastened.

Integrated rollover sensor automatically deploys the ETDs and, if deemed necessary, Head Protection Curtains in the event of a detected rollover.

Automatic Collision Notification engages Tele Aid SOS function if an air bag or ETD deploys².
